I trust that you have been able to enjoy time with friends and family over the summer holiday period and that 2021 has started well. Looking ahead, we have a lot planned with the upcoming Reunion Weekend now under a month away.

Annual CCOBA cricket match – Sunday 14 February
The Annual CCOBA cricket match against Christchurch Boys’ High School Old Boys is being held at the Valley of Peace. This should be a fantastic occasion at this great cricket club. I have been informed that the pitch is playing well, and the grounds are in pristine condition.

AGM – Friday 19 February 4.30pm
The 142nd Annual General Meeting of the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association will take place in the Coles Room (Level One, The Miles Warren Building). We look forward to seeing you there. Please click here to view the Agenda and 2020 minutes.

Reunion Weekend – 19–21 February
This year’s Reunion Weekend includes 20, 30, 40, 41, 50, 60, 70 and 80 Years’ On groups. This will be one of the largest reunions we have held for many years and I look forward to welcoming Old Boys from the 1940s to the early 2000s.

We will be unveiling the next round of Old Boys’ Posters and presenting the Old Boys’ art piece to College at the Cocktail party following the AGM.

If you have not yet registered, please do so here.

Christchurch Long Lunch
The Christchurch Long Lunch was another great sell out success and those present were able to enjoy some entertaining sporting stories from Old Boy Guy Heveldt, TVNZ Sports Reporter and Producer.

We have long lunches planned across New Zealand later this year, so please do get in touch if you would like to know more.

We want to hear from you!
Our most popular stories from the Community are ones about you, our Old Boys – so, please, if you hear of a good story or you have some exciting news to share, then let us know. We would love to hear from you.

I look forward to seeing many of you over Reunion Weekend.

Alumni Manager Update

Lizzie Dyer The Quad

Lizzie Dyer
Alumni Manager

Happy New Year! I hope you managed to get a break with your family and friends.

We’re back in the office at the CCOBA and working hard on our upcoming Reunion Weekend, 19–21 February. At this stage we have good numbers, in spite of the fact that we can’t welcome any of our overseas Old Boys due to travel restrictions.

Even if you are not part of the reunion events, you are invited to attend the Cocktail Party on the Friday night and the AGM immediately beforehand. Please click here to register for these events.

We are also preparing for the CCOBA v CBHS cricket match on 14 February, the Joe Studholme Memorial Car Rally on 28 February, and the CCOBA Marlborough Yacht Race on 6 March – just to name a few of the events coming up. All the details for these are on our Upcoming Events section below.

Our Executive Principal Garth Wynne and I, and other team members, will be travelling to many regional events in the next few months, so even if you are not in Christchurch, we will hopefully see you on one of these occasions.

I also want to acknowledge those Old Boys who are overseas and not as fortunate as we are in New Zealand. Be assured, we are thinking about you wherever you are, keeping Covid at bay, and we hope you continue to keep safe and well.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

EXTERNAL EVENTS
14 FebruaryCalling all cricketers – the annual CCOBA cricket match

Make sure those cricket whites are ready to go for Sunday 14 February.

That’s the date of the annual Old Boys' cricket match at The Valley of Peace Cricket Club. This year we’re playing Old Boys Collegians in what’s sure to be a hard-fought and entertaining match.

We’re trying to get the team sorted early to avoid any last minute scramble. If you’d like to be part of the Christ’s College contingent, please contact Hugo Davison (021373845) or Derek Banks (0275027444) to register your interest. Cost per player is $30 and includes lunch.

Old Boy Derek Banks, 80, is Patron of the Valley of Peace and likens playing there to a village green in England. An avid cricketer for many decades and captain of the 1st XI when attended Christ’s College, Derek finally retired from cricket five years ago.

Joe Studholme Memorial Vintage and Classic Car Day

It’s time to polish up the cars, and pack the picnic lunch.

One of our favourite Old Boy summer events, the Joe Studholme Memorial Vintage and Classic Car Day, is scheduled for Sunday 28 February 2021.

We’ll gather at the Quad at College as usual at 9.30am, and leave town by 9.45am.

The morning coffee stop will be at Henry and Jenny Studholme’s salmon factory, home and garden at Hororata. Our picnic lunch destination will be Rockwood Station homestead near Windwhistle, the home and tourism venture of Ben and Cheryl Richards.

Any inquiries about the day should be made to either Martin Vincent on 021 202 8147 mvincent587@gmail.com or Rod Buchanan on 021 528 430 oberau@xtra.co.nz.

6 MarchCCOBA Yacht Race

The annual Christ’s College Old Boys’ Yacht Race is planned for Saturday 6 March – and you are invited to attend.

This is going to be so much more than just a yacht race! It will be a chance to compete for the third time for the Jeremy Turnbull Memorial Trophy.

Last year’s annual race was great fun and well supported. Please forward this email to all Old Boys and keen sailors to encourage them to attend. Zac Ensor with his crew on “Paradigm” was 1st last year, but the win certainly wasn't aided by Executive Principal Garth Wynne and CCOBA Alumni Manager Lizzie Dyer who were part of the crew.

Who will claim line honours this time?

Skippers are to arrange their own crews and the race will start from the Waikawa Yacht Club at 1300 hours on Saturday 6 March, following a briefing at 1200 hours. Afterwards, there will be post-race celebrations and presentations at Oswald jetty, Kumutoto Bay. Please bring finger food.

For any queries please contact:

Zac Ensor 03 572 4882 or ensor.d@xtra.co.nz
Nigel Taylor 03 572 8969 or mill.stream@xtra.co.nz

31 MarchMelbourne Branch Dinner

Aren’t we all happy to have 2020 behind us? To celebrate making it through, and to catch up once more, we’ve planned our annual CCOBA Melbourne Branch Dinner for Wednesday 31 March – just before Easter. The previous gatherings have been memorable with great conversation and delicious food.

Melbourne CCOBA cordially invites you to dinner and billiards.

Wednesday 31 March, 6.30pm (dinner at 7pm)
The Sandringham Club, 92 Beach Road, Sandringham, VIC 3191

Please RSVP by 28 February to Nick Williams at nick.williams@iinet.net.au

If you know of Old Boys in Melbourne, or any who are visiting at that time, please let me know or ask them to RSVP to Nick.

7–8 MayProposed Reunion weekend 7–8 May 2021 for the Christ’s College Nepal Expedition April–May 2001

Luke Tiller (12416) is organising a reunion weekend for members of the expedition. The proposed programme will include a lunch at College on Friday, followed by a school tour and a chance to view the expedition’s video and photos. You’ll also be able to hear about progress at the Kharikhola Primary School that College sponsored and that we visited after our trek to Everest Base Camp. On Saturday, there are plans for a 4WD mission to visit Lake Coleridge and Mount Oakden where the team prepared before going to Nepal. Please get in contact to help make this a memorable reunion!

Expressions of interest to Luke Tiller Luketiller27@gmail.com

Twelve Christ’s College students visited Nepal in 2001 where they claimed the World’s Highest Haka with other expedition members on the summit of Kala Patthar (5,643m). The group spent a month in Nepal, combining the trek with a cultural exchange and aid project. Christ’s College Archives Nepal 2001 diary.
