As we navigate lockdowns, working from home and cancelled and postponed events, the only thing that is normal is that life goes on. Luckily, before the latest New Zealand lockdown, we were able to hold a few more Community Visits. We have been thinking of our Old Boys and families and their businesses in these difficult times. Thank you also for your understanding as our events are cancelled, postponed or have number restrictions in place.

With the country in lockdown last month, it was great to see staff and boys smoothly slipping back into the routine of working and studying from home.

Meanwhile, we have celebrated the outstanding success of Sam Bosworth – our first Old Boy to win gold at the Olympics – with his rowing eight. Read his story here.

After 24 years as Chaplain, the Rev. Bosco Peters will retire at the end of the year. If you would like to attend the special Thanksgiving Eucharist Service in his honour on Sunday 21 November, click here.

1st XI cricket in Marlborough The Christ’s College Cricket 1st Xl will face United Country in October. The game, which will start at 11am, will be held at the Black Cottage Cricket Ground on Saturday 9 October. BYO picnic, with a bar on-site. This picturesque ground is on the Clouston's property on the outskirts of Blenheim. Dan Clouston's son, David, is a well-known winemaker who owns his own winery and has two labels – Two Rivers and Black Cottage – and is a keen cricketer. Address: 56 Mills and Ford Road West (accessed from O’Dwyers Road or Thomsons Ford Road). College plays Marlborough College on Sunday 10 October, starting at 10.30am, at Horton Park. If you are in Marlborough, please come along and support the boys.

Ball firmly in Old Boys’ court

The Christ's College’s basketball alumni team overpowered the College A side in the second clash of past and present players in the gym.

Held on Saturday 31 July, the keenly anticipated game featured 12 Old Boys taking on the top College players. The Old Boys, who had come from as far as Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, were coached by Andrew Harrison and Tony Mann, and assisted by Will Lovell, who was making the move from the court to the coaching bench.

Featuring Canterbury Rams players Max Darling and Mason Whittaker, and including two sibling match-ups with the Patterson and Davidson brothers taking the court on opposing sides, the Old Boys defended the inaugural title, keeping the younger boys at bay in overtime, 87–84.

The popular event, sponsored by Research Associates Limited, has become an established part of the annual Christ's College basketball calendar. Christ's College basketball also wants to acknowledge the support of Archibalds, Kinbuild, McCarthy Contracting and Online Vet Store.

Graffiti

The 10th edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary defines graffiti as “unauthorized writing or drawings on a surface in a public place”.

The Christ’s College definition would perhaps go something like this: “Unauthorized writings or drawings in a place where you hope no one will find them.” However, found they always are, whether they are on a desk, in the Assembly Hall or even in Big School.

The earliest evidence may be the name “Ollivier” on two desks gifted to Ferrymead Heritage Park and now in its schoolroom. Members of this family have attended College since 1859.

The Old Workshop, in this 1933 photograph, appeared to be a location where it was acceptable to add names to the walls.

In 1990, when alterations were made to Big School, the removal of panels uncovered a group of names, including William James Vesey Hamilton (2354), who was in South Town from 1907–1914. He was a Prefect, and captain of the 1st XI in 1914.

After the 2011 earthquakes, repairs were made to the Assembly Hall, which uncovered the names of actors over many years.
